Campbell And Andrew: Blues In The Cruz
Saturday, June 30, 2012 at 12:00 PM - Sunday, July 1, 2012 at 6:00 PM (PDT)
Santa Cruz, CA
Ever wondered how to get more swagger in your blues? More low-down, nitty gritty, sexiness? Ever wondered how to add more play into your fusion--variety, creativity, expression, emotion? Andrew and Campbell are masters of both, and I am excited to invite you all to a two-day workshop taught by this dynamic duo.
They will be teaching the fundamental technique that gives you that slow, sleepy swagger and silky connection in your partnered dance, as well as providing ample room for creativity and play--expanding our vocabulary of movements and throwing in some concepts from other dances, as well. If you want to step up your traditional blues OR your fusion, this is definitely the place for you!
Campbell is known for melting into her partner's connection and making her partners more aware of their own movement by mirroring even the most subtle detail. Her fluid body movement, unparalleled balance, and playful creativity can be attributed to a diverse technical background in many styles of solo and partner dancing, but her dancing is unpretentious; she follows to make each dance the best it can be for her partner.
As an instructor, Campbell's warmth and patience create an inviting atmosphere for all levels of students. Her classes are well-planned, efficient, and strike a healthy balance between fundamentals and technique with fun games. She gives a wealth of information to both leads and follows so each partnership can be conversational and dynamic. One warning: Campbell's enthusiasm for dancing and teaching is said to be contagious!
Andrew's passion for teaching dance stems from a passion to help his students find their own creative voice. Though his first venture into social dancing was as an eighth grader trying to impress a girl, he now sees dance as a medium for cultural learning and artistic expression. He specializes in teaching students how to dance the Blues, and he has taught around the world at events such as Mile High Blues, Urban Blues Recess, and European Blues Invasion. Andrew's approach to dance instruction balances technical rigor with spirit and creativity. In class, he draws on his background in social, vernacular, and classical dances to inspire and challenge students toward clear, confident, fully integrated movement. He spent the past summer in Africa, studying dance and drums with local artists to connect more deeply with the roots of Blues.
When not dancing, Andrew pursues a post-MS graduate degree in Sustainable Design and Construction at Stanford University. He researches contractual frameworks that may accelerate the adoption of sustainable technologies and practices in the construction industry.
Out-of-towners--please support our small but passionate local scene--come to the Cruz and get the Blues!
